Stopping the Violence Against Women Program

The "Stopping the Violence Against Women Program" provides counselling to women who have been victims of :

  • family violence
  • spouse/partner abuse
  • childhood sexual abuse
  • sexual assault

The services offered include:

  • Crisis Intervention
  • Short-term Counselling
  • Individual Counselling (wait list for services)
  • Group Counselling (offered at various times during the year)
  • Consultation
  • Referrals to other agencies

These services are provided free to women living in Langley, Fort Langley, Aldergrove and Cloverdale areas, with counselling offices in Langley and Aldergrove.

 

Goals of the Counselling Program 

  • to provide a safe environment for women to explore their issues
  • to recognize the strength of each woman and offer a supportive, non-judgemental setting where a woman can make decisions for herself
  • to assist women to gain an understanding of the power imbalances in our society which result in women being vulnerable to abuse
  • to assist a woman's understanding of the dynamics of abuse which holds the abuser accountable for their actions
  • to assist a woman in gaining an understanding of her situation and provide alternatives and options for her consideration
  • to assist a woman to heal the emotional wounds and reduce the long term effects of abuse

 

Women interested in accessing our counselling services are encouraged to call the counselling office and arrange for an intake appointment where we will

  • take a brief history
  • explain the kind of services we have available
  • assess how appropriate our services will be to meet your individual needs
  • register or waitlist you for counselling services or recommend a more appropriate community resourse.

 

"Boundaries and Beginnings" Group

 This is an information and support group for women who have experienced abuse in an intimate relationship.  It is a group for women who want to learn more about the issues and effects of relationship abuse in the company of others who have experienced this kind of abuse. These groups run for ten weeks - a two hour session, once a week - and begin in January, April and September.
